The Power of Voice: Speech Recognition Technology to the Rescue

Voice recognition technology has come a long way. The initial impression that I got about it five years ago was that it was virtually worthless software, at least that particular version which seemed to produce results nothing even close to what was intended.

I must say that I’m impressed with the Microsoft Windows XP version that I’m using at the moment, which after a few sessions of voice training, works like a charm. In fact, I used it to write this entry. Sure, it’s not 100% reliable to use as a standalone composition tool, but it certainly does make things a whole lot easier to write, particularly when you only got one good hand to work with.

I have yet to complete all the available voice training sessions, but after completing only two sessions ( which took about ten minutes each), the technology proves to get 80 to 90% accuracy, requiring minimal effort for me to edit and perfect compositions. According to the instructions, the more training sessions you do—all which are repeatable—the more accurate the technology is.

Voice training sessions involve simply reading random passages in to the microphone ( ideally in a quiet place) so that the software can identify patterns in your speech and save it to your speech profile, the foundation for the software. So far, I’ve been able to use this voice recognition software with Microsoft Word and MSN chat, but unfortunately, could not use it with online text editors such as Yahoo e-mail and WordPress.

In addition to writing composition, voice recognition software is also popularly used to execute menu commands and tasks, i.e. save, open, print, copy, paste, close, etc. As I close this entry with the power of my voice, I highly recommend Voice recognition software for anybody who struggles typing or simply is just lazy to type.
